It doesn't get picked up for a solid week or two unless it melts right away. When the city plows come through the first few times, they generally just shove all the snow to the side of the road. Who knows where you'll end up maybe hitting another car or in a big patch of snow. Sometimes when you're going up a hill, if you aren't going fast enough and it's snowy/icy enough, you can just stop going up altogether and start sliding back down. Sometimes even tow trucks can't pull you out, so it's not uncommon to see big construction equipment like backhoes pulling people out of ruts and ditches. If you slide into a ditch, you may as well give up immediately: there's just no way you'll ever get out. They may slide off the road and into a big patch of snow, which is generally impossible to get out of without a lot of digging and some kitty litter. Eventually they have to press harder on their brakes, and at that point they start sliding. It happens most often while snowing or just after it's snowed, while the snow is still all powdery and fresh. Unless you're absurdly careful - like, to the point that driving several miles takes nearly an hour - it can happen to anybody, ESPECIALLY cars without front or 4-wheel drive.
